A first for Aqueduct Marina

For many years, Aqueduct Marina has sought to help decarbonise the waterways and marina operations as much as possible. More recently, the Church Minshull-based marina has calculated its carbon footprint in an effort to find ways to reduce the business’s environmental impact further. As a result, Aqueduct was one of the first inland waterways marinas to offer HVO alongside conventional diesel. Ev drivers have not been overlooked with the installation of charging points in the carpark, all of which helped the marina gain the coveted TYHA Clean Marin status.

However, in a first for an inland marina, Aqueduct is now able to offer hydrogen to the boating community equipped with fuel cell technology. The marina can now supply BOC’s Genie lightweight cylinders that contain 30% more gas than equivalent steel cylinders, resulting in fewer changeovers.

Alongside the announcement of Aqueduct’s latest efforts to help boat owners reduce emissions, they are working with Hydrogen Afloat, producers of their hydrogen fuel cell domestic power system for boats. These innovative units can be fitted to the roof of most narrow boats and will reduce engine running time for battery charging while emitting nothing more damaging than water.

In addition to supplying hydrogen, the establishment of a commercial agreement with BOC will enable Aqueduct to supply any of the BOC gases to customers. Tom Raines, Chandlery Manager at Aqueduct, said, ” We would need to set up new customers with a BOC account, which normally takes around 10 minutes, after which customers can buy welding gas, balloon gas, oxygen, as well as hydrogen.

Robert Parton, MD of Aqueduct Marina, said, “My expectation is that we will not sell much hydrogen in the short term, but there are power systems such as the one provided by Hydrogen Afloat on the market now, and I am looking forward to seeing how the hydrogen propulsion market develops.”

Nick Swift, Director of Hydrogen Afloat, added, “We are delighted that Aqueduct are the first marina in the UK to stock hydrogen.  We need to find ways to decarbonise the canals and rivers of the UK.  We can start with domestic power, since that works now, but in time I expect we will see hydrogen use for propulsion. Birmingham, London, and other cities already have fuel cell buses, so hydrogen gas is becoming more widely used. Making hydrogen available at the canal-side supports innovation in the inland waterways, creating the opportunity for early adopters to take advantage of the benefits it offers”.

Cruise Moor Scheme

Marinas join forces to launch new visitor mooring scheme

Five independent family run marinas are joining forces in 2024 to offer inland waterway boaters the opportunity to enjoy a new discounted visitor mooring scheme – Cruise Moor.

The Cruise Moor scheme which will be launched in February at Boatlife in Birmingham sees Aqueduct Marina, Droitwich Spa Marina, Dunchurch Pools Marina, Overwater Marina and White Mills Marina collaborate to provide moorers with the unique opportunity of staying on each of the marinas on a visitor mooring for up to two weeks with a fabulous 20% discount.

It is hoped the new initiative will not only encourage more boaters to explore the UKs waterways network but enable them to enjoy the facilities and personal service offered by the ‘fabulous five’ independent marinas.

Boaters can find out how to qualify for a Cruise Moor card from one of the participating marinas and then plan their cruising season in the knowledge that they can enjoy the facilities of another independent marina with a 20% reduction in visitor mooring fees.

Spokesperson for Cruise Moor, Robert Parton of Aqueduct Marina said: “All of the five marinas involved in Cruise Moor share the same aspirations of encouraging boaters to get out and about and explore the miles and miles of the beautiful waterways network.  As family-run marinas we work incredibly hard to be the best in the business and go the extra mile to provide excellent customer service. It is a terrific scheme and a wonderful opportunity for us all to showcase our marinas to each other’s moorers, we are all looking forward to watch it develop over the coming months.”

Aqueduct Marina’s Boating Event hailed a success!

Visitors, exhibitors and organisers agreed that despite the somewhat blustery conditions, this year’s Aqueduct Marina Boating Event was a great success. The aim was to provide an event that was a ‘boat show for boaters’, and as a result, around 500 visitors took the opportunity to visit the marina, speak to staff and visit 19 trade stands.

In addition, over 200 people attended the evening’s entertainment, much of which was provided by Elvis tribute Paul Larcombe and singer Josh Whittall.

Both exhibitors and marina staff commented on the levels of interest shown by visitors, the majority of whom were genuinely interested in discussing their boats and their boating experiences.

Robert Parton, Aqueduct Marina’s MD, said, “I am very grateful to the exhibitors who supported us and had a stand at the show, some of whom stayed until late and enjoyed the lively Elvis night as well. Also, well done, Hannah (Aqueduct Marketing), who successfully managed to target the right people and get boaters and aspiring boaters here. I spent most of the day by our brokerage boats and had plenty of excellent conversations with existing and soon-to-be boat owners.”

Kevin Peart, MD of Aegina added, ”It was good to meet you and your team, we enjoyed the day and had many interesting conversations about solving water supply and making safe drinking water for the canal boat community. We will be back next year”.

Anyone interested in visiting or exhibiting at next year’s event should keep an eye on the Aqueduct Marina website and social media channels where the next Boating Event, expected to take place in July, will be publicised. Visit www.aqueductmarina.co.uk

Exhibiting at BoatLife 2023

Visit Aqueduct’s stand and save money at BoatLife Live

To help you enjoy your narrowboat in 2023, the Aqueduct Marina team in Cheshire are offering some real savings to visitors to the NEC in February.

Any narrowboat owner visiting the Aqueduct stand at BoatLife Live exhibition between the 16th and 19th of February, and holding a full-price admission ticket, should visit the Aqueduct stand in Hall 19 on Stand E31 to get their ticket stamped. This can then be exchanged for either a free week’s mooring, worth £154, or one free use of the slipway, worth £160; terms and conditions apply.

Both options will enable boat owners to use Aqueduct Marina as a mid-cruise safe harbour in 2023, as it is within easy reach of the Llangollen, Macclesfield and Caldon canals. The Church Minshull marina’s significant savings are something everyone is looking for during these difficult times.

So why not plan your boating year and cruising routes to make the most of the marina’s giveaways and join the many boat owners who already moor at Aqueduct and find the marina an ideal place to moor or store their boat, whatever the season.

Boat Life 2023

HVO now available from Aqueduct Marina

Aqueduct Marina has filled the first boat with HVO, the greener alternative to traditional diesel, having recently installed a new dedicated tank at the Church Minshull marina on the Shropshire Union Canal.

Hot on the heels of gaining accreditation as a Clean Marina by The Yacht Harbour Association, Aqueduct Marina is now offering boat owners the option to fill up with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil from a new 1000-litre tank. After taking delivery of the environmentally friendly alternative to diesel, made from vegetable oils, Chandlery Manager Neil Heyes got things underway by refuelling the first boat with HVO rather than traditional diesel. With no alteration to existing engines required, many see the use of HVO as the way to reduce the emissions from existing boat engines without requiring expensive conversions to electric propulsion systems.

Aqueduct’s MD Robert Parton said, “We are expecting a slow uptake initially, but anticipate as boat owners gain confidence in the product, its use will increase”.

So if you need to top up the tank on your boat and will be passing Aqueduct Marina, why not call in and do your bit to reduce the carbon emissions of your next trip?

For all of your narrowboat needs, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us on 01270 525040 or email info@aqueductmarina.co.uk

Aqueduct Marina is officially a Clean Marina

This year’s Crick Boat show proved to be the ideal place for The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA) to present Aqueduct Marina with the first Clean Marina award for an inland marina. Many of the marina’s staff attended the event at which MD Robert Parton and Jon White, TYHA’s General Manager, spoke after the presentation to staff members of a certificate of compliance and Clean Marina flag.

During the presentation, Jon White praised the team at Aqueduct for the amount of work they put in to gain the award, saying, “They have put a tremendous amount of time, effort and hard work, alongside some financial investment into gaining this award. When we first visited, we provided a report with an action plan, and they went away, committed to the plan and have delivered outstanding results.”

Jon White went on to say that gaining a Clean Marina Award is not a box-ticking exercise. “After the initial assessment, the marina is given an action plan, which may require some investment on their part, communications to berth holders or the introduction of new ways of working. They then have to provide evidence that they have committed to and fulfilled the plan and achieve an 80% score in each of the different components that make up the award.”

Robert Parton, Managing Director, Aqueduct Marina, said, “We are naturally delighted to achieve the new Clean Marina standard here at Aqueduct Marina. The inspection was rigorous, so we had to amend a few activities and embed some company policies, making the exercise a useful project. We are, without a doubt, a better and more environmentally aware marina as a result. Aqueduct Marina has, for some time, had an ongoing focus on reducing its environmental impact. We are delighted to win the accreditation and to be the first inland marina. Having already installed electric car charging, introduced greener products in the Chandlery and now offering HVO diesel, we aim to reduce our carbon footprint even more. And we’re pleased to say our customers are fully engaged and supporting the effort.”

The Clean Marina award was launched in 2021 to help marinas get the basics right such as blackwater capture and treatment, correctly managing segregated and hazardous waste, spill prevention and treatment, wash-down capture and filtration, drain interception, using sustainable products and preventing plastic pollution, and of course, influencing tenants, contractors and boaters to be more sustainable too. Initially launched in Australasia, the award has been gained by five coastal marinas, with a number of others currently looking to achieve the award.

Aqueduct Marina kicked off the season with an opportunity to ‘meet the team’

April is usually seen as the start of the season for most people, and this year the team at Aqueduct began the 2022 season with an opportunity for people to come along and meet the team. The event gave visitors the chance to talk to a number of staff members and ask questions about moorings, maintenance and sales.

In preparation, marina staff undertook a spring clean to plant up the flower beds, spruce up areas that needed a lick of paint and even renovate the Elsan point! As a result of the spring clean, the marina was ready to welcome visitors with drinks and canapés.

The event saw good numbers of people participate and take the opportunity to discuss the coming season with staff in an informal setting. Phil Langley (Marina and Operations Director) led the event and said, “The Staff site maintenance day was a great success, giving all the team a chance to do something constructive and different around the marina; we also mixed people up, so we were not working with our normal colleagues, leading to some great inter-team bonding.”

Phil went on to say, “The meet the team day also had a positive impact on our customers who enjoyed seeing office staff out in their overalls. A couple of days later, this was followed by our meet the managers afternoon and marina customers social, which also saw a good-sized crowd attend. As a result, we booked in some extra work as well as gaining a couple of new moorers. It also allowed our existing customers to catch up with their fellow Aqueduct boaters while enjoying a glass of wine”.

These are just the first of a number of events planned throughout the 2022 season at the Church Minshull marina. Details of these will be posted on the marina’s website and social media channels.
